more info about old school summer courses:
one week (6 day) course - This course runs from Monday to Saturday every week during the summer. These are small groups of 8-12 students. During the week, you will participate in activities such as: backpacking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and canoeing.
This trip begins and ends at Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters (where we will have meals and attend worship services on Monday and Friday nights).
This is a fast-paced adventure course where you will be pushed physically and spiritually.
what to expect:
staff - You will be teamed up with guides who are knowledgeable in their areas of outdoor expertise, and have a lot of fun doing what they do. More than that, you can rest assured that the guides that will be on your course have been praying for you for months, and preparing to lead and challenge you in your relationship with Christ. You and our staff will most likely keep in contact for years to come!
physical challenge - You may be expecting an easy stroll through flat woods, or you may be expecting Everest. It is always hard to gauge the difficulty level of an area of wilderness you've never visited, or activities you've never participated in. If you are in good shape, keep it up. If you have been enjoying your couch at home for large portions of the day, you need to get up and start some conditioning for your course. You don't have to be in peak athletic shape for your course, but huffing and puffing always makes your day less enjoyable. As always, before any physical activity, it's good to get checked out by a medical professional.
FAQ:
So, are we gonna be eating roots and berries, or what? Your diet in the backcountry will showcase your creativity. All of your meals are provided by OLD School staff. We will provide the ingredients and help you to learn how to cook some amazing dishes using camp stoves and cookware. You'll use pasta, rice, flour, cheese, tortillas, vegetables, and many other things to whip up your culinary masterpiece. Believe it.
Do I need to have some outdoor experience before I come to OLD School? No prior experience is necessary at all. All that we ask is that you prayerfully prepare your mind to be challenged by Christ, and that you bring a positive attitude, being willing to be pushed to the limit physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
What if a student gets hurt on the trail or parents need to get in touch with a student because of an emergency situation at home? Our staff is certified to handle most injuries or unexpected incidents while on the trail. O.L.D. School trips are never more than 30 minutes away from a main road and are met by a replenishing team twice during the week and more for two week trips. If you would like a copy of our safety procedures, you can download it off of our website or contact our office. All trip leaders are certified in CPR and First Aid, and many have more extensive medical training.
When do I arrive? What do I do when I get to Snowbird? We ask that you and/or your group arrive at Snowbird after 2pm. You will then be met by your trip leader or an O.L.D. School staff member who will begin to get to know you and to prepare you for your course.
